By using this website, or by creating an account or sending an access request, you agree to these terms and to the privacy notice. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

You may browse, search, cite and reuse the archive as these terms and the rights statement on each record allow. When you use the site, you agree not to:

  try to gain access to accounts, data or systems that are not yours, or to get around rate limits, access controls or the access-request process;

  overload the site, or harvest it in ways that harm other users. Use the open interfaces described on the reuse page and keep your request rate reasonable;

  share a download link issued to you, or pass the original files on to others except as the rights statement on the record allows;

  use the archive to harass, expose or harm any person, including the people named in records or their families;

• 05

  give false or misleading information in an account or an access request, or pretend to be someone else.

An account is optional. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details and your email inbox secure, and for what is done with your account.

Give accurate details and keep them up to date. An account is for one person.

We may suspend or close an account, and refuse or withdraw access to downloads, if it breaks these terms or puts the archive, its staff or other people at risk. You can delete your account at any time from the Account page.

High-resolution copies are not downloaded directly. You send an access request, and the archive’s staff decide it. They may approve, refuse or limit a request.

An approved download link is tied to your account and is time-limited. Use the files only for the purpose you gave in your request.

Using this website gives you no ownership of what you find here. Records may be protected by copyright or other rights held by others. The rights statement on each record tells you what you may do with it.

A record without a rights statement is still under review. Treat it as protected and write to us before reusing it. Please cite the archive when you use its material.

If you believe a record is wrong, harms someone, or should not be public, tell us. We review each request and may correct, restrict or remove the record.

Write to archive@projectwitness.org, and say which record you mean and why.

The website and everything on it are provided “as is” and “as available”. We make no promise that records, descriptions or translations are complete or free of errors, or that the site will always be available or uninterrupted.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss or damage that results from using the website or relying on its content.

We may update these terms. The “Last reviewed” date at the top of this page shows when they were last checked. If you keep using the site after a change, you accept the updated terms.
